Finally the tables are starting to turn: in praise of Tracy Chapman

Today is National Album Day in the UK and the theme this year is debuts. Paul Bridgewater, my editor at The Line of Best Fit, invited me and several others to write a short text about our favourite first albums. There were so many I could have chosen, but Tracy Chapman's 1988 self-titled debut seemed to be particularly relevant to the state of the world today.

The best debut albums ever, as chosen by Best Fit staff and writers.
Marking this year’s National Album Day, we pick the best first records by our favourite artists.

Of course, I could easily have written a full essay on another favourite debut from 1988: the brilliantly daft and only record Tori Amos made as Y Kant Tori Read. It's the beginning and the end of her high camp era, and it holds up surprisingly well thanks to a fantastic 2017 remaster.
