High above and to the south of Sofia sits the Rila monastery, where the Bulgarian Orthodox religion came to prominence and spread throughout the country. The monks here generally stay out of view, but I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one. For me, the story in this picture comes from the way the monk and the woman are hurrying in opposite ways, heads bowed in respect, not wanting to disturb one another with so much as a simple glance. The mountains are always watching.
