Today's history lesson (📷)

When the Åland Islands were returned to Finland after the disintegration of the Russian Empire 100 years ago, the islanders were allowed to keep the Swedish language and culture that had been their way of life since the late 13th century. This church was built around the year 1280 and some of the original wall paintings from that time are fantastically well preserved, emphasising the grand maritime heritage of this unique autonomous state.
